Marves -Denpasar, November 10, 2022– The Indonesian government plans to continue the discussion on the three main issues raised at the G20 Summit when the country holds the ASEAN Chairmanship next year. Indonesia’s ASEAN Chairmanship will effectively start from Jan. 1, 2023.

The Indonesian Foreign Ministry’s spokesperson Teuku Faizasyah said the continuation of the G20 discussion is aimed at accelerating the global recovery after the pandemic. This is in line with the theme raised by the G20, namely, Recover Together, Recover Stronger.

“The priority issues raised by Indonesia [in G20] will be followed up when the country assumes ASEAN Chairmanship,” said Faizasyah to the G20 Communications and Media Team, Thursday, Nov. 10.

The three main issues raised by Indonesia in the G20 Presidency are sustainable energy transition, digital transformation, and global health architecture.

“As president of the G20, we will take advantage of the achievements in the G20, including

Indonesia’s priority issues to be followed up during our service in ASEAN Chairmanship,” he said.

He added that the government did not rule out the possibility of other issues being raised during the Chairmanship, although he did not elaborate any further. “Of course, there will be other issues that will be highlighted (during ASEAN chairmanship), but it is unpredictable,” he said.

Previously, Indonesia held the ASEAN Chairmanship in 2011. During the chairmanship, Indonesia succeeded in introducing several initiatives. Those include the implementation of the ASEAN Political- Security Community Blueprint and the establishment of the ASEAN Institute for Peace and Reconciliation (AIPR) in the field of conflict resolution management.

In the maritime sector, ASEAN also succeeded to reach an agreement to strengthen cooperation through the ASEAN Maritime Forum (AMF) for the comprehensive handling of transnational crimes including the agreement on a nuclear-weapon-free area in the ASEAN region.

Regarding the plan to conduct a follow-up on the G20 issues, the Indonesian Finance Minister Sri Mulyani Indrawati in early August conveyed that these issues are considered relevant to the current condition.

“These issues are so relevant to the current economic challenges and the geopolitical situation as well as the current global trend,” said Sri Mulyani, as quoted from the Finance Ministry’s website.

The handover of the ASEAN Chairmanship will take place at the ASEAN Summit on Nov. 10—13 in Cambodia. The Cambodian Prime Minister will hand over this position to President Joko Widodo, while Indonesia’s chairmanship will begin on Jan. 1, 2023.

Cited from the Cabinet Secretariat website, during Indonesia’s leadership in 2023, more than 300 meetings will be held in Indonesia ranging from the economy through socio-culture to politics and security. Indonesia will also strengthen Jakarta’s role as the diplomatic capital of the Indo-Pacific through the presence of the ASEAN Secretariat.

These meetings are prioritized to be held face-to-face but they are subject to change depending on development of the COVID-19 pandemic situation. To increase domestic tourism, several meetings will be held outside the capital city, such as in Bali, Labuan Bajo, Lombok, Surakarta, and Yogyakarta.
