Marves - Banda Aceh, The Indonesian Coordinating Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Investment (CMMAI) through the Deputy Coordinating Ministry of Maritime Resources in collaboration with the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN), Ministry of Education, Cultural, Research and Technology, and OceanX is again holding University Lecture Tours (ULT) held at the TDMRC Auditorium of Syiah Kuala University (USK), Banda Aceh, Aceh, Friday (24/05/2024).

This ULT event carried the theme "Tsunami and Biodiversity" and involved researchers from Indonesia BRIN, OceanX, and USK.

Chair of the USK Institute for Research and Community Service (LPPM), Prof. Dr. Mudatsir, M.Kes, said that USK welcomed the implementation of ULT on the USK campus. He expressed his thanks to the CMMAI and other parties who had trusted USK to hold this activity.

"ULT is a very good opportunity, both for students, lecturers and campuses," said Prof. Mudatsir in his speech.

Prof. Mudatsir said that the activities held were very good and beneficial for students and lecturers. So that by having discussions and sharing information in this forum, it can provide an overview and insight regarding the issues discussed, namely related to "Tsunami and Biodiversity", especially in the Aceh region.

“This is very good. Last year, one of USK student even took part in OceanX’s Program, namely Indonesia Education Program. "There are even two researchers who took part in the Indonesia Mission 2024," he said.

Furthermore, Prof. Mudatsir said that his party was positive about the existence of this ULT. The reason is, ULT is a form of collaboration between the Indonesian government and OceanX to share knowledge in the marine sector.

"Hopefully there will be things that can be used to build cooperation," he said.

Meanwhile, OceanX Science Program Director, Mattie Rodrigue, said that the Indonesian Mission together with the CMMAI and BRIN had been planned and prepared for two years.

"OceanX is a non-profit organization that collaborates between science and communication," said Mattie.

Mattie explained that there were a number of activities that her party had carried out so far. OceanX has a number of powerful resources and tools to carry out its activities, such as the Oceanxplorer ship, science media, education, collaboration, and many others.

“The educational activities invited many people from universities and young people to come on board. "Oceanxplorer ship, two submarines, helicopters, DNA lab capabilities, acoustic mapping capabilities, and centralized data storage capabilities," she explained.

She added that the Indonesia Mission was divided into five legs in Indonesia. Aceh Province was the first stop location for Leg 1 which focused on tsunamis and biodiversity. This mission in Indonesia from the Batam area took samples at several points and carried out dives using a submarine.

“The key research is about oceanography, geology, biodiversity and fisheries, megafuna. "We are collaborating with BRIN, KI, ITB, IPB, Unhas, Unpati, Miami University, Glocester marine Genomic Institute," he said.

On the other hand, USK Tsunami Disaster Mitigation Research Center (TDMRC) researcher, Prof. Dr. Muksin said he was very interested in the theme of this event. He said that so far the existence of the USK TDMRC has played a role in tsunami mitigation.

"TDMRC was founded in 2006, inspired by the earthquake and tsunami that occurred in 2004," he said.

According to Prof. Dr. Muksin Indonesia is an area or region that is at risk of natural disasters, namely earthquakes. One of the areas most at risk of earthquake disasters in Indonesia is Kalimantan.

He explained that the earthquake disaster resulted in derivative disasters, one of which was the Tsunami. "There is no technology or science that can predict earthquakes precisely. "TDMRC covers many fields involving many parties," he said.

During this time, TDMRC has carried out a number of collaborations with various parties or institutions, especially in the fields of research and innovation with the aim of providing advocacy which ultimately becomes policy.

“As input to the government. "The output is disaster resilient communities and regions," he stressed.

For information, ULT was held in the framework of implementing cooperation between the Indonesian Government and OceanX regarding Marine Research and Technology, Public Awareness, and Capacity Development through a series of "Indonesia Mission 2024" activities.

The ULT which took place on the USK campus today was attended by dozens of participants consisting of students and lecturers as well as invited guests. In this session, apart from presentations from the speakers, there was also a question-and-answer session on the chosen theme and about "Indonesia Mission 2024".
