Marves - Nusa Dua, November 15, 2022 – Indonesia has set aside a Bamboo Dome building at the Apurva Kempinski, Nusa Dua, Bali, as the venue for state guests' lunch venue.
The Bamboo Dome, which is situated on the seashore, is visible from the hotel lobby platform where the G20 Summit takes place. To allow leaders and delegates to enjoy Indonesian specialties together, a big circular table and 43 chairs are set up in the 32-meter dining room.
The leaders’ luncheon is among the most important meetings. Therefore, it took all year to finally select the venue. Initially, it was planned to erect tents on Apurva Kempinski's backyard.
Elwin Mok, the G20 Summit's visual creative consultant, explained to the G20 Communications and Media Team on Tuesday (15/11/2022), "The request was pretty simple; President Joko Widodo requested luncheon with a sea view,” he said.
Later, the decision to forgo setting up a tent was made out of concern for the area's brisk coastal winds, due to its immediate vicinity to the Indian Ocean. The creative team then had intense discussions with Coordinator of the G20 Assistance and Partnership Team, Wishnutama, as well as the State Secretariat. It was then proposed to construct structures out of bricks and stones.
However, this plan was shelved when it was realized that the structure would be nonpermanent and to be torn down after conclusion of the G20 event. Elwin stated, "We had to find something unique that is specialized for G20”.
Inspiration can strike at any time. Elwin and his group got a brilliant idea when traveling to Melasti Beach in the southern part of Bali when they saw a group of construction workers using bamboo in a building project. Following discussions with the team, it was determined that bamboo would be used as the primary material for building the luncheon venue.
Bamboo has a profound philosophy and can be easily bent because it is flexible, elastic, and adaptable. Additionally, bamboo structures are recognized as being the most resilient to earthquake shocks.
The group created a design right away that was tailored to the Balinese people's way of life. Rubi Roesli, the designer of the Bamboo Dome, explained that people are used to making bamboo toys since they were little.
Apart from that, to complete the concept, Rubi and Elwin then met with Gajah Mada University (UGM) lecturer and bamboo calculation expert Ashar Saputra. They had discussions until they found an ideal shape, which was a dome or semi-circular dome.
"It is in line with the G20 symbol, a mountain range (gunungan)," said Rubi, adding that bamboo is an environmentally friendly material. So that the bamboo may still be used for various purposes once the G20 Bamboo Dome Summit disassembled.
The Bamboo Dome can simultaneously promote Indonesia to the international world for the excellence of Indonesian culture, not just in terms of architecture. "We want to demonstrate that there is a country called Indonesia that is still authentic in the midst of a synthetic world," Elwin concluded.
