MarvesNusa Dua, November 14, 2022 –The United Nations (UN) Secretary-General Antonio Guterres conveyed the key role of G20 as a means to encounter global challenges. Guterres delivered the statement at a press conference at the G20 Media Center, Bali International Convention Center (BICC), Monday (14112022).

Guterres explained that the role of G20 is highly crucial as a means to face global challenges comprising climate change, multisector crises, and geopolitics clash issues that usher in new conflicts and disturb the previous attempts to settle the conflicts.

Concerning the climate change issues, based on the discussion at COP27, it is difficult to meet the need to prevent a global temperature increase of 1.5 degrees. Therefore, Guterres recommended the importance of a new approach through a collaboration pact between developed and developing countries in which G20 is accountable for 80 percent of global emissions.

Related to the issues on SDGs, Guterres said an SDGs stimulus package must be adopted to provide investment and liquidity for development in the sectors of education, health, gender equality, and renewable energy. Issues on food and energy crises require urgent response to eradicate hunger through the Black Sea Grain Initiatives and ease of access to Russia-sourced food and fertilizer to the global market.

On the energy crisis issue, the only option is to encourage the transition of renewable energy and advanced internet access to realize global connectivity by implementing real steps to guarantee life through renewable energy usage conducted in non-conflicting efforts.

“Indonesia plays a part in solving unequal global economy and finance that is causing the inequitable distribution of resources particularly during the pandemic as well as in providing equal opportunity to developing countries to contribute to tackling the climate change issues. Indonesia also performs its extraordinary capacity in the attempts of unifying disputing countries, promoting dialogs, and finding real solutions amidst hard situations when the geopolitics separation is distinct,” said Antonio Guterres.

The UN Secretary-General strongly supports Indonesia’s ASEAN Chairmanship next year and hopes that the country can push forward a solution to the Myanmar conflict.
