Marves - Nusa Dua, Nov. 13, 2022 – In a bid to accelerate the construction of Kayan Cascade hydropower plant in Bulungan regency, North Kalimantan province, the Indonesian Government has called on PT Kayan Hydro Energy, in collaboration with Sumitomo Corporation, to immediately perform the groundbreaking of the site no later than December 2022.
The acceleration of the hydropower plant construction is vital as it is a form of Indonesia's commitment to reducing gas emissions. This commitment is part of the results of the G20 energy ministers' meeting in Bali, last September. The construction of this powerplant is one of the national strategic projects to realize Indonesia's commitment to achieving net zero emissions by 2060.
“The President has ordered the groundbreaking to be carried out immediately. It means that this is a real project within the framework of energy transition which has been going on for quite some time. I am sure that with the directives, Sumitomo will work harder,” Presidential Chief of Staff Moeldoko said at the Project Establishment and Partnership for Energy Transition ceremony, at InterContinental Sanur Hotel, Denpasar, Sunday, Nov. 13, 2022.
According to Moeldoko, the construction of hydropower plant is a monumental event as it concerns the future. Therefore, the commitments that have been agreed on must be immediately realized in concrete form.
“According to the President’s directives, it shouldn’t just stop here. The construction of the Kayan hydropower plant is a historical event. In a bigger context, it is to interpret the theme of the G20 Summit on energy transition,” he said.
Moeldoko also stated that the Government will monitor and evaluate the follow-up actions after the cooperation agreement between PT Kayan Hydro Energy and Sumitomo Corporation, in Jakarta, on October.6, 2022. He believed that the President would also include the construction of hydropower plant as a national strategic project.
For the record, this cooperation is part of an exploration of a green industry development in North Kalimantan by utilizing hydropower energy.
President Director of PT Kayan Hydro Energy Andrew Suryali said that the construction of the hydropower plant has attracted investment in amount of US$17.8 billion.
