President Jokowi Welcomes Heads of G20 Delegates with a Three Flames Backdrop

MarvesNusa Dua, November 15, 2022 – President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo welcomes state leaders at the G20 Summit from the inner lobby of The Apurva Kempinski, Nusa Dua, Bali. After shaking hands, Jokowi will pose with his guest for a photo with a backdrop installation dominated by red and blue with the G20 symbol in the center.

"The installation resembles three flames as a symbol of the three topics raised by the Indonesian government for this event," said Visual Creative Consultant of the G20 Summit Elwin Mok, to the G20 Communications and Media Team, in Nusa Dua, Bali, Tuesday, Nov. 15.

As the holder of the presidency, President Joko Widodo has the priveledge to determine the main issues to be discussed at the conference. The three main pillars are Global Health Architecture, Sustainable Energy Transition, and Digital Transformation.

Apart from symbolizing the theme, said Elwin, the flames also depict a burning passion in inviting the world to grow together through the summit theme Recover Together, Recover Stronger as well as describing Indonesia’s characteristics. "Indonesia sits in the ring of fire, which means there are many volcanoes in Indonesia," he said.

The installation, made of iron, was created by a creative team under the coordination of the G20 Assistance and Partnership Team which is part of the National Organizing Committee for the G20 Presidency. Consisting of three panels, this metal building measures 7.2 meters high, 8.8 meters long and 2.2 meters wide. "The production process took two months," said Elwin.

Rubi Roesli, the backdrop installation designer, explained that the statue is made of perforated iron which is formed and executed through a laser cutting process. The creative team have already discussed with the G20 Assistance Team Coordinator Wishnutama and also the State Secretariat to finalize the design.

The discussion and creative design process, said Rubi, took quite a long time and went through various design changes to accommodate all aspirations and ideas until the final design was secured before the middle of this year. "Afterwards, it enters the production process," said Rubi.

As a creative team, Elwin and Rubi also went back and forth to the workshop to monitor the progress. "When you look at it in the workshop, it looks too huge. However, it turns out proportionally fit after installation in Apurva," said Rubi. After completion, the three panels were then flown to Bali a month ago.

The installation of this background is not as easy as it may seems. The decorating team had to figure out how to get it to fit to the area and will not be distracted by Apurva's huge mountain- shaped statue or giant kayon that was already in place. "We are looking for a solution on how to close it so it doesn't interfere with the visuals," said Elwin.

The team then made a black iron box to cover the yellow statue. As a result, the backdrop installation where the G20 leaders greeted and shook hands with President Joko Widodo was done as desired. "Visually recognizable for the G20," said Rubi.

That isn’t the only real challenges. The team also had to consider the location of the statue in the middle of the Apurva pavilion lobby during the initial design. "That position is in a wind tunnel, in the end the material chosen is perforated iron so that it doesn't collapse by the wind," said Rubi.

Even after it was finished, there were still changes requested by the G20 committee team. One of them is the addition of the G20 symbols in a smaller size in all over the backdrop. In the initial design, the large G20 logo was only in the middle. "So that you can still see it even if you zoom in," concluded Rubi.

The Apurva Kempinski Hotel, located in Nusa Dua Bali, is the venue for the G20 Summit. Aside from the conference, heads of states and governments are also scheduled to have lunch at the Bamboo Dome in Apurva's backyard, which is tens of meters from the shores of the Indian Ocean.
